How to Choose a Racing Harness
All belts and harnesses are definitely not the same. The right kind of safety harnesses not only impact your safety on the road but also help you stay compliant with the safety standards and guidelines.
Here are some of the factors that will help you pick the suitable harness:
The belt width
When it comes to choosing the rightly sized harness, you either have a 2-inch or a 3-inch option for the width. The 3-inch width option is more common the bigger cars with sport compacts.
These also include the modified cars, sprint cars, and hobby stocks. However, if you’re riding a smaller car (which may consist of a quarter midget, cage carts, and junior sprints), the 2-inch width is a better option. Your car racing store representative will be able to guide you better. You want to check your local track or series rules to see if they require a specific size.
On the other hand, some 3-inch harnesses have a 2-inch upper shoulder belts. They are usually referred as 3+2 harnesses and most of them are FIA 8853-2016 approved for use only with an FHR / HANS device. When wearing a HANS device, these narrower belts fit the HANS shoulders better as they offer a more positive location onto the device.
Belt length
The belt length also depends on a number of different situations. If you have a smaller car (let’s, say a quarter midget), you’d need a longer midget to reach the bar that the harness attaches with. Usually, you need longer belts if the harness attachment points are located far from the seat.
The belt types
The choice of the belt also depends on the type of harness that you have and whether it’s a wrap-around or bolt-in. If you have a bolt-in harness, it’ll need a triangular bracket at the end. The bracket needs to be either welded onto the frame or bolt through the spud. On the other hand, if you have a wrap-around harness, you’d need multiple belt wraps to pass through the buckle.
In fact, you can also go for a combination belt that incorporates some features of both of the options. These feature a wrap-around end and a bolt-in and triangular bracket. The belt, in this case, can be easily secured into the harness and threaded through with the help of a wrap-around buckle.
The key to staying safe on the racing track is to configure the harness well. We also recommend investing in the finest quality Auto Racing Safety Equipment.
